Who We Are
The Robert and Judith Sturgis Family Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) organization, founded in 2002 with an eye towards helping organizations in our local community of the Greater Hartford, CT area. Since that time, our "local community" has grown to include the Boise, Boston, and Philadelphia areas. While we like to support locally, we also support national and international charitable organizations that provide aid in areas of particular importance to the family.
History
The Foundation was established in 2002 by Robert and Judith Sturgis who made annual donations for the next 18 years, with total grants of about $173,000 to about 30 charities. These grants were made to support the general purpose of these charities.
In 2020, three family members were added to the Board of Trustees: Guy Sturgis, Tamitha Gordon, and James Lilliendahl.
In 2021 we lost Judith to Pancreatic Cancer, and her leadership will surely be missed. Judy's Estate made a substantial gift to the Foundation, continuing her passion for charitable works. This gift thrust us into a whole new world of responsibility, administration, and grant giving. We plan to shift our emphasis to soliciting grant requests for specific projects that fit our mission.
As of October 2024, the Foundation has made grants totaling $1.3 million with a current asset balance of $9 million.

Mission
Our primary mission is to support established 501 (c) (3) charities that focus on helping people help themselves. We also prioritize those charities for whom our Trustees have or feel a personal connection.
